04.06.09 Calling All Cadets!

The hugely popular Cleveland Police Cadet Programme is looking for young people aged between 14 and 19 to join the Middlesbrough District group.

The group has reduced in size since the start for various reasons and the decision had been made to open the recruiting process again to bring it back up to full strength.

Application forms must be in by 5pm on Friday 26th June and interviews will be held in July.

The Cadet programme aims to increase social responsibility, life skills and employability while strengthening empathy and understanding between the Police and young people.

There are four Cadet groups in each District that meet weekly, and the groups are run by Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Volunteers and Youth Workers.

Cadets learn police-related skills through exciting, challenging and interactive workshops, as well as developing memory skills and self-discipline through drill practice.

Over the coming months and years, they will be contributing to safer stronger communities by taking part in Safer Neighbourhoods activities and community events.

There is also the possibility to achieve recognised qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Deputy Chief Constable of Cleveland Police Derek Bonnard said: "The feedback we have had so far from young people is that they think the programme is excellent. It is a challenging programme, but provides an excellent opportunity for Cadets to gain skills in a number of areas.

"I am pleased to be able to open up the recruitment process again, to bring the Middlesbrough District group up to its full strength.

"We are looking for young people between 14 and 19 to join - all we ask is that you are enthusiastic, motivated and enjoy taking on new challenges.

"I would also like to thank Safe in Tees Valley and the local authorities for the support they have given to the Cadet programme.

"This is just one of example of how we as a Force are engaging with local communities in order to Put People First and deliver an improved citizen focused policing service."

Added Cleveland Police Authority member Pam Andrews-Mawer who has played a key role in developing the cadet programme "Now that the scheme is off the ground we want to ensure that as many youngsters as possible benefit from the skills, training and experience they can gain -- and the contribution they can make to their local communities.

"With spaces now available in the Middlesbrough Group, I would urge anyone who might be interested and wants to know what the programme is all about to get in touch. This is an important part of our efforts to strengthen links between police and public -- and it can a very rewarding experience for the young people who get involved."
