"Obviously the decision on the levels of salaries to be offered to Police and Crime Commissioners is a matter to be decided by the Government, but what is very clear is that those individuals who take on this role will face a massive challenge in overseeing one of our most important public services—and being answerable to local people for the quality of their local police service.
That means ensuring that the public are able to vote for candidates with the experience, skills and ability to take on the role—and clearly the level of salaries will be a factor which potential candidates will take into account when deciding whether they should stand for election."
