Leaders of Cleveland Police and the Police Authority have today underlined that they will not be diverted from ‘our continuing pledge to deliver the quality service which our communities deserve—and need’ and have emphasised that Force is under firm and effective management.
They gave their message following the developments this week in the investigation, initiated by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and being led by the Chief Constable of Warwickshire, which have resulted in the suspension of the Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable.
Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Dave Pickard, Assistant Chief Constable Sean White and Assistant Chief Officer Ann Hall, together with the senior managers, are overseeing the operation of the Force and have emphasised that it is ‘business as usual’ as far as all aspects of activities are concerned.
In addition, Chief Superintendent Adrian Roberts will be temporarily promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief Constable and join the Chief Officer Team with effect from next Monday.
Said Mr Pickard “This is a difficult period for everyone involved with the Force, but I know there is total commitment at every level and from every officer and member of staff, including our partnership staff to Putting People First and continuing with our day-to-day duties of serving and protecting our communities.
“I want everyone to be absolutely clear about the interim leadership structure for the Force that is in place, as well as recognise the support from the Police Authority during this time.
“Our focus has to be on business as usual - we will not let matters which in reality are largely outside the control of the force and the authority divert us from that task, and nor should it divert attention from the massive progress we have achieved in recent years in making Cleveland Police one of the best and most effective forces in the country.
“I hope that will continue to be recognised by local people and that they will continue to give us the support and recognition which we have always enjoyed.”
Added Police Authority Chair Mr Peter Race “I and my colleagues have been enormously impressed that, in the midst of the very difficult developments this week, the leadership team have never wavered in keeping their eyes on our top priority of protecting the people of Cleveland.
“I am sure that it has been a tough time for every officer and member of staff but I know they have the full support of the entire Police Authority—and I believe the public—in carrying on with their duties.
“Quite rightly there is a concern that the investigations taking place should be concluded as quickly as possible in the interests of everyone concerned and that is what we are determined to press for—recognising the fact that the key decisions on their conduct and progress rest with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary which initiated the process and the Chief Constable of Warwickshire and the Independent Police Complaints Commission who are overseeing the investigations.
“What is important is that, as the process continues, we work with the Force and other partners on maintaining the best possible service to the public. That is the task on which we are all concentrating.”
